For sale is a vintage 1979 Guyatone PS-102 Distortion pedal, also known as the Zoom Box. This pedal is in the same general family as the MXR Distortion+ and DOD 250-style circuits, with a similar op-amp-based design. This version features germanium clipping diodes, which help give it a smoother, warmer distortion character.
The Guyatone Zoom Box is also well known for its association with The Edge of U2, who used one early on, adding to the pedal’s reputation among vintage effects enthusiasts.
This particular pedal shows significant exterior wear from age and use, so please review the photos carefully. Cosmetically, it has plenty of vintage character, but the inside is in excellent condition. It has been serviced, cleaned, and tested, and it works properly using either a 9V battery or a standard 9V adapter.
When cranked, this pedal sounds excellent, with a raw, classic distortion tone that works great for vintage-style overdrive and saturated lead sounds. I have included a test video of this exact pedal so you can hear what it is capable of.
Service work performed:
- Exterior and interior cleaned
- Replaced two blue tantalum capacitors with polypropylene capacitors to help improve long-term reliability (included if you want to put it back to stock)
- Cleaned the pots and jacks with DeoxIT
- Added what I believe are original Guyatone-style knobs sourced from Japan, as the original knobs were missing
