This Fender Champ was made in Japan under contract by the Elk Corporation, which, to my understanding, had been producing Fender amplifiers since the early 1980s. Elk had been building amps since the early 1960s, often creating Fender-inspired designs and circuits, and this amp definitely follows that tradition.
Although it has a tweed exterior, this amp does not have a traditional Tweed Champ circuit. It is more like a Blackface-style Champ in tweed clothing, featuring diode rectification, volume and treble controls, and onboard reverb using a USA-made Accutronics 3-spring tank. The reverb works great and has no issues. Overall, this is a cool, great-sounding, and relatively rare little amp with some thoughtful servicing and tasteful upgrades. It has a lot of character, and I hope it goes to someone who will really enjoy playing it. Below is a list of what was done to it:
- Small 120v-100v ac adapter included to run it safely on North American power.
- The amp has been fully cleaned and detailed
- It received a full recap, and several lower-wattage plate and cathode resistors were replaced with higher-spec parts for improved reliability.
- I coated the exposed MDF inside the cabinet and the exterior tweed with a slightly amber protective shellac coating. It looks much nicer and protects the tweed from stains.
- The original Fender speaker was questionable, as the paper surround appeared weak and fragile in spots. I replaced it with a new Mojotone Anthem speaker.
- I added a fully reversible modification using a push-pull volume pot. With the knob pushed in, the amp functions normally and retains its stock operation and appearance. When the knob is pulled up, the tone stack is modified for a volume boost and extra grit, giving the amp a more raw, Tweed Champ-inspired feel. In this mode, the tone controls are essentially bypassed, making the amp more touch-sensitive and lively. It is a very fun and useful mod that really brings the amp to life while keeping the original functionality intact.
